Prof Victor Pan delivered a keynote speech co-authored with Dahoon Kim entitled “Deriving the Final Order of Discourse Particles in Korean and Chinese” at workshop on Mapping Word Order: A Cartographic Perspective on Syntax, Beijing Language and Culture University, March 26-29.

Professor Adam Ledgeway (U. Bergamo) gives three lectures at the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, under the Wilson T. S. Wang-New Method College Visiting Professorship in Language Education. 1. March 24: Romance Verb-movement and Parameters of Clausal Microvaration: Synchronic Variation and Language Contact. 2. March 25: Cultivating Linguistic Awareness in Language Education: Comparative Lessons from the Linguistic Tapestry of Chinese, Romance and Germanic. 3. March 30: At the Interfaces: When Syntax, Phonology, Pragmatics and Semantics Come Together.

Jin Yan presented the paper ‘Syntactic derivations of polar questions in Suzhou Wu and Zhangzhou Southern Min’, collaborated with Prof Victor Pan, at The III Workshop on Linguistic Variation at Interfaces (VARINT 2026), University of Girona, Spain, March 19-20.

Zetao presented his paper “The DP structure of nDrapa: when a classifier and a definite marker co-occur” at GLOW in Asia 2026 The 2nd Workshop for Young Scholars (GLOW-in-Asia-WYS) at Nanzan University, Nagoya, Japan, March 13-15. Former team member Haoliang Liu also presented his poster paper “DOM Bleeds Argument Ellipsis: A Case-Movement Account”! Well done Zetao and Haoliang!

Prof Victor Pan presented the paper ‘Mandarin unconditionals and the typology of adverbial clauses’ co-authored with Dr Zhuo Chen (The first author) at The 6th International Conference on Adverbial Clauses/Adverbial Clauses: New Horizons, Free University of Berlin, Germany, March 9-10.

Prof Victor Pan participated in the PhD defense of Dr Ruoxuan Li as External Examiner at Université Paris Cité. The other members include: Prof Claire Saillard, Prof Caterina Donati and Prof Carlo Cecchetto, Prof Francesca Foppolo, Prof Charlotte Hauser. Dr Ruoxuan Li is a former RA in our syntax team. Congratulations Dr Li!

Team members Zetao and Youngyoon, ranked the 2nd in the semifinal on Feb 10, 2026, got to the final of CUHK MSing singing competition! They performed together the song “Butterfly” by Jason Mraz. On Feburary 3, 2026, Professo Hedde Zeijlstra (Georg-August-University in Göttingen) gave a talk titled “Reinstalling verbal c-selection” for the research seminar at the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Wency presented the poster ‘An ERP study of the distinction between pro and trace in Mandarin Chinese’ at the Neurolinguistics Workshop at the 34th Conference of the Student Organization of Linguistics in Europe (ConSOLE34), IUSS, Pavia, Italy, January 28.

Prof Victor Pan delivered an invited talk co-authored with Zetao Xu entitled “The Nominal System in nDrapa” at 2026 Joint Seminar on Miracle Creed New Horizons of Linguistics – in the Humanities, hosted by GKNU Institute of Humanities and SMOG Syntax Circle, Gyeongkuk National University, Andong, South Korea, January 9.
